Contrary to popular opinion, not many manufacturing companies produce finished goods from start to finish. In many cases, they will depend on smaller fabricators to provide them with various components and parts. Once they have the necessary parts, they will simply assemble them and put the finished product up for sale. For instance, consider the case of a toy manufacturing unit. This unit will typically produce a diverse range of toys. To produce these toys, the company will require significant amounts of plastic or latex. However, it will also require the services of a top plastic fabrication company. This is because the plastic fabricators will need to manipulate the raw material (or latex) into the desired form.
Similarly, in some cases, the manufacturing company might only need to utilise a limited amount of plastic in its manufacturing process. To cite an example, some manufacturing companies need plastic for creating casings, screws etc. In such cases, it doesn’t make sense for a commercial entity to have an entire wing dedicated to providing plastic fabrication services. Having a dedicated fabrication wing would only mean expending maximal effort for minimal results. Instead, it might be a better strategy to engage the services of a reputed plastic fabrication company for obtaining the desired parts and components.
In the past, many plastic fabrication companies created moulds for producing components and parts of all kinds. However, technological advancements have had an effect on the fabrication sector too. The emergence of new machines and procedures have made it easier for fabrication companies to provide high-quality components with the desired levels of accuracy and precision. Many fabrication companies these days employ CNC laser cutting machines to produce plastic components and prototypes.
Machined plastics might not compare favourably with those obtained via injection moulding methods. This is especially so when it comes to creating highly precise prototypes. Injection moulding is also viable when you need to alter the configuration of the machine slightly for producing second or third versions of the desired prototype. But, this does not mean that CNC prototyping does not have any advantages.
For years, plastic fabricators have relied on injection moulding techniques to produce prototypes. These methods are popular for creating specific parts on a repeated basis. Thus, the machinery will be ideal for carrying out bulk production runs. However, a CNC machining station can add a few dimensions to the fabrication process. For instance, it can enable the fabrication company to adapt the part and model it as a prototype. The company could continue to do this until it finalises the part. Thereafter, the company could continue to carry out bulk production runs of the part via injection moulding processes.
By adding a CNC machining station in your facility, you could:
- Bypass a variety of problematic issues such as fluid freezes, feed defects etc.
- Avoid having to expend time and effort towards constructing expensive moulds
- Alter the designated tool paths for fostering adaptability levels and,
- Enhance your efficiency levels by enjoying faster turnaround times
Plastic fabricators would do well to avoid comparing CNC machining methods with their injection moulding counterparts. Both techniques have their merits. However, the use of CNC saw cutting tools yields far more precise parts and components. In many cases, these parts will easily exceed dimensional constraints. However, this method is not ideal for use when it comes to mass production of a part. Similarly, injection moulding can provide optimal returns on investment when it comes to carrying out bulk production runs of a part. But, it is worth mentioning that the material provision for an injection moulding operation is usually an all-in-one technique that involves a series of stages. Many variables abound throughout the process. These could have a significant effect on the final outcome. However, once you have ironed all the wrinkles out, you will get a part for which carrying out bulk production runs becomes significantly easier.
